For the cheapest bright look, the Desidiya 35 ft pixel string was ₹76, the same price DesiDime members flagged this week. For a balcony or railing, choose a rope light or curtain light made for outdoor use, and for homes with small children, water-sensor LED diyas replace oil and flame.

How we picked

We checked Amazon.in prices and rating counts on 22 October 2026 and the Diwali light deals posted on DesiDime this month. We also searched 1,508 Indian Reddit threads saved on our site and found no owner discussions about Diwali lights, so this guide does not claim Reddit backing. A rating count is the number of Amazon buyers who rated a product. A small count means less certainty.

9 Diwali decoration ideas for Indian homes

Start with the space you actually have: a grill window in a 1BHK, a wall behind the diwan, a small balcony or a verandah. These ideas use the lights in our shortlist. Reuse your toran, clean jars, trays and flower decorations. The real photos below show decoration styles; they do not show the exact products linked here or promise an identical result.

1. Frame one window with a warm glow

Use: Philips Starlit 12 m string. For a flat, pick one grill window rather than every window. Measure the frame and the route to the socket, then arrange the lights around the outline with suitable removable clips. Leave the middle clear so the window becomes the feature. Keep the wire clear of opening hinges and loose fabric.

2. Make a small festive noticeboard

Use: Desidiya 35 ft pixel string. Arrange a loose rectangle around an existing pinboard, with family photos or handwritten Diwali wishes inside. This works in a rented flat without needing a whole decorated wall; check that any removable fixings suit the surface. Fix the lights separately from the paper; choose a steady setting if the supplied controller offers one.

3. Give a long wall an even rhythm

Use: Desidiya 30 m warm-white rice lights. Plan several shallow curves along the wall behind a sofa or diwan rather than bunching the entire length into one corner. Mark the support points before hanging and measure the return route to the power point.

4. Outline the entrance display

Use: Eveready Utsav string. Run it around a dry indoor doorway or the inside of your flat entrance, with a toran or marigold flowers supported separately. Keep a shared corridor clear. Leave the door movement, handle and walking space clear. Check the pack before choosing any exposed outdoor location.

5. Turn a plain wall into a photo corner

Use: Desidiya 10 ft icicle curtain lights. Measure the wall, hang the top cable evenly and let the drops fall freely. A chair, diwan or small festive display in front creates a family-photo spot without covering the whole room. Use one plain wall in a compact living room. Keep cables out of the seating and walking areas.

6. Trace a balcony outline

Use: Desidiya 20 m rope light. For a narrow apartment balcony, outline one railing rather than covering the whole front. A single line can look more deliberate than several tangled strings. Measure first and follow the supplied fixing and bend instructions. Use this setup only when the exact light, controller and connections are approved for the location; a rope shape alone does not establish outdoor suitability.

7. Light a garden seating corner

Use: Xergy solar fairy string. Place the panel where it receives the sunlight specified in the instructions, then loosely outline a suitable support behind your terrace or courtyard seating. You can use a similar arrangement near a tulsi planter without fastening the wire to a delicate plant. Check the exact outdoor rating and fixing instructions. Keep the lights above or beside the seating, away from paths and moving furniture.

8. Make a jar centrepiece or a hamper detail

Use: Desidiya battery copper fairy lights. Loosely arrange the light wire inside a clean, dry, empty jar, with the battery box outside and accessible. A reused glass achaar jar works as a styling prop once it is completely cleaned and dry. Place it on a tray, or beside a gift hamper, keeping the wire separate from food and following the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not add a candle or water to the jar.

9. Finish the rangoli with a flame-free border

Use: Water-sensor LED diyas. Arrange the diyas on a stable tray beside the main-door rangoli or in a puja corner, leaving the main walking route open. Activate them only as the pack directs. They remove the open flame from this arrangement, but small lights and batteries should still be kept out of children’s and pets’ reach.

Plan the look before adding to your basket: choose one main area, measure the light route and check what comes in the pack. How to choose Diwali lights

Warm white or multicolour

Warm white looks closest to diyas and suits most homes. Multicolour or “chasing” modes are fun on the balcony but can look busy indoors. Many strings have a controller with 8 modes, so check whether there is a steady-on setting.

Length you actually need

Measure before you buy. A 12 m string covers a 2 to 3 window wall. For a balcony railing, add the height of each drop. Buying two short strings is often cheaper than one very long one.

Indoor or outdoor

Only use lights outdoors if the listing says outdoor or gives a water-resistance (IP) rating. Rope lights and solar strings are usually made for outdoor use; thin copper-wire fairy lights are not.

Plug, battery or solar

Plug-in strings are brightest and cheapest to run. Battery fairy lights are best for small decorations. Solar strings avoid long extension cords, but they need a full day of sun to glow through the evening.

Safety checklist

  • Look for a BIS mark or registration number on the pack. Eveready lists its Utsav strings as BIS approved.
  • Do not join more strings end to end than the pack allows, and use a proper extension board, not loose joints.
  • Keep lights away from curtains near diyas and candles, and switch them off when you leave home.
  • Water-sensor LED diyas avoid oil and flame, which is safer around children and pets.
